Modern Psalms Of Delight Summary

The Psalms of Scripture are amazing on many levels. Beyond their continued relevance as inspiration and revelation, each stands as a bastion of truth and light against the growing darkness of temptation and deception. Modern Psalms of Delight are offered in the same tradition. Given the glory and majesty of Omnity and the foolishness and frailty of men, outside and inside modern Christianity, we do well to honestly worship and appeal to God in spirit and truth.

Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Psalms Of Delight…

We all have problems. Even those of us wonderfully blessed by the advances and advantages of modern life. While the authors of the Biblical Psalms often cried out to God, they demonstrated that in the Kingdom praise and petition go hand in hand. This is evident in the fact that many of the Psalms filled with the deepest reverence and awe employ a kind of sandwich method of compliment, complaint, compliment.

In many way glorifying God should be easier for our generation than any other given the absolute and scientific certainty of the existence of God. A fact, in part demonstrated by the fantastic fine tuning and astounding intricacies of actual intelligent design. Amazing scientific discoveries described millennia ago in Biblical passages include a testable model of creation that encompasses many modern discoveries in the areas of astronomy and physics, biology and human origins, earth science and understanding the universe.

Such overwhelming evidence is augmented by the simple fact that for anything to exist, it must have either been created, created itself, or possess self existence (one of the five attributes of Divinity). Such rationale holds true for everything from the tiniest particle of matter to an infinite number of universes to Omnity itself. Self evident, this undeniable proof of the existence of God is easily demonstrated by the simplest math possible: 0 + 0 = 0.

Nevertheless, some objecting to the logic of a self existent God, seek to remove the necessity of Omnity from the equation. These argue that from certain perspectives intricate and interesting mathematics and/or metaphysics could postulate a theoretical model such that nothing might indeed create something, and therefore everything. Tellingly, for such a concept to arise on earth the everything arising from nothing need be exquisitely fine tuned to at least 10 to the minus 24 millionth power (10 with 24,000,000,000 zeros after it). The chances of such fine tuning parameters occurring by natural selection alone are equivalent to an individual winning the California lottery 3 million times playing a single ticket each drawing.

For those recognizing Scripture’s authenticity, many challenges yet remain. One glaring obstacle facing modern Christianity is keeping frustrations and unresolved issues with God from overwhelming faith and hope, love and the desire to answer life’s ultimate questions. Unfortunately a steepening uphill battle, given skyrocketing levels of unthankfulness and entitlement.

Within Churchianity, most find it pretty easy to thank God when relationships and/or circumstances are going well. Even with trouble and trial are knocking at the door, many are able to recognize things could be worse. The difficulty arises when our hopes and plans are turned upside down, placing increasing demands on our wobbly faith. In His incredible and exacting "Sermon on the Mount" Christ addresses this very issue in a seemingly counter intuitive mindset:

“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for. You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.” Matthew 5:3-10 MSG

Hardly the kind of blessings most of us pray for, Jesus is explaining the dichotomy between heavenly and earthly wisdom. What God knows is that mankind was created to be the repository of Divine glory, thus all our attempts at happiness must fall short of not only God's expectation but our own. Even wise and obedient believers groan inwardly, along with creation itself, waiting for the fulfillment of the promised redemption:

"That's why I don't think there's any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what's coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens. All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it's not only around us; it's within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We're also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don't see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy." Romans 8:18-25 The Message

Time Meets Eternity

In all honesty too few of us attain to Scripture’s lofty ideals. Yet here more so than elsewhere it behooves us that our reach exceed our grasp. More a process than event, the journey towards radical discipleship can be long and painful. Step by step, through trial and error we’re encouraged to practice growing in spiritual sensitivity and love of the truth. As Jesus taught the Samaritan woman at the well:

“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.” John 4:19-26 NIV

Learning the art of appropriate worship is a vital component in developing and maintaining a thankful and humble heart. All the more so since modern entitlement, the original sin of men and angels, is rooted in unthankfulness. For this reason alone, giving thanks to and worshiping our Creator is key to spiritual health, growth and well being. And as we shall see, we have many other great reasons to do so.
